It’s the classic question that has torn book lovers and cinephiles for as long as there have been films; “Which was better, the book or the movie?”.
Now, we’re here to settle the debate with one of the most in-depth, comprehensive studies comparing the ratings of over 250 classic books-turned-movies to reveal the best and worst adaptations of all time.
How did the Irishman stand up to its source material? Did the Lord of the Rings do Tolkien justice? Which films were definitively better than the books that inspired them? Find out below!
Methodology:
We analysed and compared viewer and reader submitted ratings from IMDB and Goodreads for 279 books that were adapted into films and TV shows.
As Goodreads ratings range from 1-5, ratings were doubled to achieve a score out of 10.
Where a book was adapted into a series of movies e.g. The Hobbit, an average of all adaptations was used.
For TV shows based on a series of books, the shows overall rating and the average rating across all books in the series was used.
